Phil has been Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra since 2009. He comes from a generation of well-known musicians from the Salvation Army. As a youngster, he regularly featured as a soloist on both the cornet and the trumpet throughout the UK and abroad alongside his brother Matthew and their father Stephen Cobb (MD of the International Staff Band). In 2000 he was appointed principal cornet of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. He won the prestigious Harry Mortimer prize four times. Phil is a former student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, having studied with Principal Trumpet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra; Paul Beniston and renowned trumpet soloist Alison Balsom. In 2006 he won the prize for the most promising young player at the Maurice André International Trumpet Competition. Upon graduation, Philip was immediately in high demand; trialling for positions in the London Philharmonic and Halle orchestras before accepting his current position with the LSO.
You probably already heard Philip Cobb play on the film music of Harry Potter or Shrek or during the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.
